My Monday next week: a campus retreat.

My Monday next week: a campus retreat. (Why don't we call them "advances" if we're supposed to make progress?) I think the experience will be in strong contrast to tomorrow's (Friday's) meeting on General Education that is technically related to this.

To make the most sense of it all, click through at the linked page to see CSUMB's original and still extant Vision Statement. Tag anybody else I've missed.

UC Davis is one of the eight US campuses involved in the #AAU #STEM research about improving teaching and learning "at scale"—above the single classroom level.

Originally shared by Doug Holton

"Higher education is “now reaching a major tipping point,” Coleman added. “We cannot condone poor teaching of introductory STEM courses because we are trying to weed out the weaker students in the class or simply because a professor, department and/or institution fails to recognize and accept that there are, in fact, more effective ways to teach.” Failing to adopt evidence-based teaching practices in the classroom “must be viewed as irresponsible, an abrogation of fulfilling our collective mission to ensure that all students who are interested in learning and enrolled in a STEM course -- not just those who will choose to major in or pursue an advanced degree in that discipline -- are provided with the maximum opportunity to succeed,” she said."

Tone-deaf spokesperson quote (granted, it's her job):

Toni Molle, a spokeswoman for the California State University system expressed disappointment, saying penalties for some violations were more than 100 times larger than fines that could have been assessed by state workplace safety regulators.

Molle said the university system would appeal.

Nah, nothing racial about it. Mere coincidence.

In addition to his role as Quark on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and as Principal Snyder on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Shimerman is an accomplished Shakespearean actor. He announced that he’ll be translating that experience into a new role as professor via Twitter....

A new Sacramento Bee op-ed, this one by veteran columnist Dan Walters. I agree with his main point about the need to revisit the California Master Plan for #highered, and I've been saying that since 2013 if not sooner.

Mileage varies on several of his cited examples, and I think "seamless" systems are only seamless at the 30,000-foot level of observation. But he may really just be throwing edu-chum in the water with that, pushing the conversation.

Ironically, this story came out the morning of the US attack on Syria. (It covers higher ed across #Monterey County, #California, but leads with the story of a Syrian student.)

Lama Ranjous was coming of age in Damascus just as Syria was thrumming with the possibility of change. She left her hometown of Hama, about three hours from Damascus, to live in the city and study political science, and just after she graduated college in 2010, the Arab Spring began to deliver hope of democracy, but also rocked the region with violence.

Hard to tell if it's a matter of "fleeing" or a lack of new hires, but the numbers are what they are.

“Numbers of faculty and staff have not recovered from losses during the great recession, whereas numbers of graduate teaching assistants and administrators have increased,” says a report by professor Anne Donadey of SDSU’s Diversity Equity and Outreach Committee.
