Now that I'm on the other side of it, still one of the very few black (African American) faculty in the Cal State system of 23 campuses, I like to ask a variety of questions.

It's fun, if not always effective, to pick on the management side for their limited recruiting, hiring, and retention abilities, but I must also ask questions of myself. For example, did it matter that I had only one black classroom teacher in my entire K-12 and undergrad experience? Zero coaches and counselors? etc. After all, here I am, with proper degrees and a job and an attitude. ;-)

As I was preparing my talk, I knew the thing I needed to make clear was that all the good thoughts and feelings about diversity are mostly useless without leadership and institutional willpower.   I also wanted to offer small things that could be done without money and without too much time. Mostly I wanted to make as clear as possible to the faculty of color in attendance that the struggles they might be facing are happening elsewhere.
